Peritoneal Mesothelioma
Mesothelium of the abdominal cavity forms the lining part of this region and when fluid accumulation occurs the due to abnormal cell division or diseased peritoneam that is called peritoneal Mesothelioma. Unlike pleural Mesothelioma, this type of Mesothelioma is quite uncommon and only found in 1/3–1/5 cases of total number of diagnosed Mesothelioma. According to statistics, peritoneal Mesothelioma is available in 54.7% male and 45.3% of female patients and the median age of this disease is 65–69 year.
The main symptoms of the peritoneal Mesothelioma is the occurrence of ascites fluid, frequent weight-loss, prolong anemia, pain in abdominal part and digestive disturbance that tends to bowel obstruction. Sometime the patient of this disease shows almost nonspecific type of symptoms, which mislead toward the problem of gallbladder, pelvic mass or any type of hernia.
If there is any discrepancy in the cell wall of peritoneam or in the abdominal cavity, it is detected by the peritoneoscopy where by doing an incision a camera is inserted inside to view the interior. In addition, by the application of CT scan it is possible to detect the nature of the Mesothelioma if it is wet or dry in nature. If the nature is detected as dry, it is generally found the multiple small mass or a single mass of dominant type. The typicality of dry type of meso is the absence of ascites or little amount of this fluid. In case of wet Mesothelioma, instead of single and dominant mass it is found to have small nodules with the presence of ascites.
At the same time, there are some general categories for cancer stage. The 1st stage means the affected portion can be completely removed. The 2nd stage denotes the presence of abnormal cavity though by removal of tumors some portion of it can be controlled , not the whole. The third stage denotes the affected major organs like liver or kidney. The last stage denotes that the malignancy has spread out of abdomen.
Surgery and chemotherapy are the main ways to fight against this type of Mesothelioma.
