Chemotherapy as a treatment for Mesothelioma

Chemotherapy is one of the treatment options for cancer by using chemical products. In cancer-affected places, due to abnormal cell division, malignancy occurs and chemodrugs, as these are predominantly anti-cancer in nature, destroy all the diseased cells of the applied areas. Mesothelioma, while malignant in nature, thus is treated with chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is used in different ways as per the requirement and the consent of the concerned physician, but depending on situation it can be administered alone, in pre-or post-surgery stage.
Application of chemotherapy is administered with different aims and purposes. On the other hand, the intensity of the treatment depends on the factors like the stage of cancer, the age and health of the patient, and the intensity of the side effect suffered by the patient.

The limitation of chemotherapy is that it cannot cure any disease, thus, in treating Mesothelioma it is used as
1.To restrict the growth of malignancy
This is pre-surgery application and it is used to decrease the size of the target tumor. This method of application is called Neo-adjuvant chemotherapy.
2.To destroy the germ cells in post-surgery
This is post-surgical method and the destructive of chemotherapy is utilized here to make the removal of the malignant tumor 100% successful. This method of chemotherapy is called adjuvant chemotherapy.
3.Palliative Chemotherapy
This application of chemotherapy is used to control the pain of the ailing patient where decrease of the size or removal of the tumor by surgery is not possible.
The administration of chemotherapy is done mainly in intravenous way or sometimes given by catheter or by port. Alimta is the name of the first FDA approved medicine for the treatment of Mesothelioma used profusely all over the world.
The side effect of chemotherapy is quite significant in its process of administration. Fatigue is a common side effect of the patients going through the session of this therapy. At the same time nausea, sore of mouth, constipation or dyrrhea occur in patients of chemotherapy.

lium and the name of this cancerous disease is originated from here because this type of cancer affects this region first. In the very first stage, this type of cancer is detected in the shape of a malignant tumor and cancerous in type. Malignant Mesothelioma is also known as meso. Mesothelioma is mainly of two types: pleural Mesothelioma and peritoneal Mesothelioma.

The lining mesothelium, surrounding chest and lungs, is called pleura and when cancer is found in the lining of this region is termed as pleural Mesothelioma. When the abdominal mesothelium is affected by cancer, it is known as peritoneal Mesothelioma. The abnormal cell division of the mesothelium is the main point of detection for this type of cancer and as it is an aggressive form of cancer, the earliest detection is the only way to prevent spreading it in other allied organs. The way to detect this type of cancer is analyzing the symptoms.

In pleural Mesothelioma, the asbestos fibers create passageways in lungs and thus create abnormal cell division caused by some unknown chemical reaction. So, in this case hoarseness of voice, difficulty in swallowing of any food or drinks or bad and long sustaining cough with oozing of blood from throat are the main symptoms, whereas in peritoneal Mesothelioma the main symptoms are nausea, weight loss, edema of feet and obstruction for bowel. Sometimes prolong anemia may be the symptom for the peritoneal Mesothelioma.

For the diagnosis of this type of disease, chest x-ray is done or CT scan or MRI is preferred by the doctors. Pleural Mesothelioma is well detected by thorasoscopy, and peritoneal Mesothelioma is well detected by peritoneoscopy. If any abnormality in the cell wall of mesothelium is found by these methods, finally biopsy detects the presence of malignancy and the effect of carcinoma.
